  2. minister 1983-89. Lange, a barrister, was
  3. elected to the House of Representatives in
  4. 1977. Labour had a decisive win in the 1984
  5. general election on a non-nuclear military
  6. policy, which Lange immediately put into
  7. effect, despite criticism from the USA. He
  8. introduced a free-market economic policy and
  9. was re-elected 1987. He resigned Aug 1989
  10. over a disagreement with his finance
  11. minister.
